Overview of the City of Cape Town Metro Police and Traffic Learnership 2025

The City of Cape Town is inviting passionate and dedicated individuals to apply for the 2025 Metro Police and Traffic Learnership Programme. This exciting opportunity, offered under the Corporate Services Directorate (Human Resources Department), is designed to train and develop competent law enforcement officers who will contribute to the City’s safety and security goals.

Successful applicants will receive a stipend of R36.66 per hour during the training period and will undergo intensive academic and physical training. The programme follows the Further Education and Training Certificate: Road Traffic Law Enforcement and the Law Enforcement Skills Programme (SP4/2012) standards.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria to qualify for the Metro Police and Traffic Learnership 2025:

  • Must have a Grade 12 (Matric) certificate – proof required.
  • Must be a permanent resident within the City of Cape Town (proof required).
  • Proficiency in English and at least one other official South African language.
  • Aged between 18 and 35 years.
  • Medically and physically fit for strenuous physical training.
  • Mentally resilient and able to perform under pressure.
  • No criminal record or pending cases.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s licence (Code B – manual transmission).
  • No visible tattoos when wearing any official uniform.
  • Must be unemployed as of the enrolment date (7 January 2026).

Physical Fitness Assessments

All shortlisted applicants will be required to complete mandatory physical fitness assessments. These are elimination-based tests — failure in any one test will result in disqualification from further stages.

Fitness Tests Include:

  • 2.4 km run — Males: 12 minutes; Females: 14 minutes
  • 30 push-ups in 60 seconds
  • 30 sit-ups in 60 seconds
  • Dead load carry (2 × 25 kg weights over 100 m)
  • Tyre drag (20 m distance)
  • 20 m shuttle runs (10 shuttles in 60 seconds)
  • 2.1 m wall clearance
  • Motorcycle reach test
  • Comfort swim (any stroke, unassisted)

Note: Pregnant applicants will not be permitted to participate in the physical assessments.

Selection and Evaluation Process

Applicants who meet the minimum requirements will undergo a comprehensive selection process, which includes:

  • Written assessment and interview
  • Medical evaluation conducted by the City of Cape Town
  • Drug testing (must be drug-free)
  • City driver assessment
  • Psychological and continuous fitness evaluations
  • Criminal record check (fingerprints and ID required)

Only candidates who successfully pass all stages will be considered for appointment into the learnership programme.

Special Conditions

Successful learners will sign a training contract with the City of Cape Town.

  • Completion of the learnership does not guarantee permanent employment.
  • Learners must be willing to wear uniforms, work shifts, and perform duties in all weather conditions.
  • Continuous physical and mental fitness must be maintained throughout the programme.
  • Applicants previously dismissed from any municipality due to misconduct will not be considered.
  • Candidates with chronic or undisclosed medical conditions that hinder performance may be excluded.
  • Learners who withdraw, fail, or are dismissed from the programme may be required to refund the City.
